Manuel Akanji’s football journey began in the youth academy of FC Winterthur in Switzerland. He made his professional debut for the club for two seasons before moving to FC Basel in 2016, one of Switzerland’s top clubs. He quickly established himself as a regular starter and helped Basel win the Swiss Super League in 2016/17.

At Basel, Akanji’s performances as a centre-back caught the attention of Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga. He made a significant move to Dortmund in 2018 and established himself as a key player in the team’s defence. He helped them win the DFL-Supercup in 2019 and DFB-Pokal in 2020–21. On 1 September 2022, Akanji joined Premier League champions Manchester City and went on to help the club win the continental treble in the 2022-23 season.
