Ice Cube’s Career

Ice Cube initiated his involvement in the music scene by founding his first rap group, C.I.A., in 1986. The subsequent year, he, along with Eazy-E and Dr. Dre, established the gangsta rap ensemble N.W.A. He served as the lead rapper, contributing to the writing of Dre’s and the majority of Eazy’s lyrics on “Straight Outta Compton”. This album marked a significant milestone, shaping the early identity of West Coast hip-hop and distinguishing it from its East Coast counterpart. N.W.A gained notoriety for their provocative lyrics, particularly their confrontational stance against abusive police, which generated controversy.

Cube’s lyrical contributions to N.W.A’s 1988 release, “Straight Outta Compton”, played a pivotal role in the widespread popularity of gangsta rap. Subsequently, his solo political rap albums, including “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” (1990), “Death Certificate” (1991), and “The Predator” (1992), achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success. Due to a financial dispute concerning the group’s management led by Eazy-E and Jerry Heller, Ice Cube parted ways with N.W.A. in late 1989, embarking on a solo rap career by collaborating with New York artists.

In addition to his musical pursuits, Cube has been actively involved in the film industry since the early 1990s. His cinematic debut occurred with the portrayal of Doughboy in director John Singleton‘s 1991 drama “Boyz n the Hood”, a film named after a rap song he wrote in 1987. Cube further extended his influence in the film world by co-writing and starring in the 1995 comedy “Friday”, which evolved into a successful franchise and transformed his public image into a lucrative movie star.

Venturing into directing, he helmed his first film, “The Players Club”, in 1998, also assuming production responsibilities for the film’s accompanying soundtrack. By 2020, he had amassed an impressive filmography of around 40 movies, encompassing diverse genres such as the 1999 war comedy “Three Kings”, family comedies like the “Barbershop” series, and buddy cop comedies such as “21 Jump Street” (2012), “22 Jump Street” (2014), and “Ride Along” franchise. His involvement extended to serving as an executive producer for many of these films, including the 2015 biopic “Straight Outta Compton”. In recognition of his contributions, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of N.W.A in 2016.
