Damar Hamlin was a highly regarded cornerback coming out of high school and was pursued by numerous prestigious college football programs. He chose to attend the University of Pittsburgh and played 3 games as a freshman before suffering an injury that required a medical redshirt (2016 season).
In his second year, after recovering from his injury, Hamlin switched to safety and recorded 41 tackles and 1 interception in 9 games (2017 season). For the following year, Hamlin emerged as a key member of the Panthers’ secondary, leading them with 77 tackles and 2 interceptions, earning him honourable mention All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) honours (2018 season).
In his junior year in the 2019 season, Hamlin continued to excel, recording 84 tackles and 10 passes broken up. As a senior in the 2020 season, Hamlin captained the Panthers’ defence and was named to the All-ACC second team after leading the team with 66 tackles and 7 passes broken up. He also earned ACC Co-Defensive Back of the Week honours for his outstanding performance against Virginia Tech.
Hamlin’s impressive college career earned him a spot in the 2021 NFL Draft, where he was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round. He played a reserve role in his rookie season, tallying 2 tackles and 2 pass breakups in 14 games.
In 2022, Hamlin became a starting safety for the Bills after Micah Hyde suffered a season-ending injury. He showcased his leadership and playmaking abilities, leading the team with 12 tackles and a sack in a loss to the New York Jets. However, he was ejected in a win against the New England Patriots for an illegal hit. Hamlin’s season came to an abrupt end when he collapsed during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals in January 2023. He went on through his recovery phase and became fit and healthy to return to the game.
